For a little bit in the morning, Vash didn't really pay attention to the date. His sense of time was rather messed up, all told, and he had too much to think about to pay attention to it.
Then a radio where they were staying the night came to life, with a voice he hadn't heard in a century and a half, and he suddenly couldn't breathe. The walls were closing in on him, he was a danger, a danger, he had to get away from everyone, Rem's face mixing with faces from JuLai until he was running, running outside of the building, and onto the sand, until he could no longer hear anyone, then he collapsed to his knees, curling in, a low keening coming out in lieu of the apologies that he could yell into the air but nobody would hear, nobody could hear. Happy birthday, Vash, Nai's voice superimposed over everything...
It would take a while before he could unfold and start looking for the way back, face frozen in a mask of something that didn't feel right but if he tried to move it, he would break again.
